Vice President of Fund Development
Goodwill Industries - Suncoast

On behalf of Goodwill Industries-Suncoast, Inc. in Tampa Bay, Florida , we are seeking an energetic Vice President of Fund Development to support Goodwill's strategic vision to help people achieve their full potential through the dignity and power of work.

Through Goodwill, people experience the self-respect derived from earning a paycheck. Meet some of the individuals whose lives have been dramatically improved through this amazing organization's community partnerships and programs.

With more than 1,100 employees in 10 counties, Goodwill Industries-Suncoast is not your average charity. Believing strongly in "giving people a hand up instead of a handout," Goodwill achieves its mission through job training, employment, and personal growth opportunities for people with disabilities and other barriers to employment.

Goodwill Industries-Suncoast:

  • helps people in West Central Florida secure training, find jobs, and become more financially independent. Services include assessment, training, temporary placement, coaching, and temporary and permanent placement. The Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) accredits all human service programs. For more information, see employment services.
  • operates five apartment communities that provide affordable living options. Three are architecturally barrier-free facilities for people who have disabilities, and two are designed specifically for seniors 62+ with low incomes: in total, 335 HUD rent-subsidized apartments. Click on housing to learn more.
  • offers several community-based corrections programs to help people break the cycle of addiction, assist with their integration back into society, and help them become productive, law-abiding citizens. Follow the links for more information about substance abuse treatment service and work release programs.

To support these services, Goodwill Industries-Suncoast operates 16 retail and three outlet stores. An online retail outlet is available on the organization's website. Marketing and IT staff are ready to assist in implementing online giving and expand social media applications.

The organization's board of senior business leaders expects benchmarking and performance measurement in every department. In 2008, Goodwill Industries-Suncoast was the:

  • - number one ranked Goodwill among all 170 nationally for the number of people placed in jobs (28,020)
  • - third nationally in the number of people served (92,954)
  • - spent 88.6% of its budget for programs and services in the fiscal year ending June 30.
About the Position

The candidate we seek will joyfully embrace the distinct culture of Goodwill, which appeals to many fiscally-minded donors. He or she will join the senior management team that represents one of the largest non-profit, community-based organizations in this nation. Tenure among the senior management team is strong. The selected employee will work from the facility located on the Gandy Causeway in northeastern St. Petersburg, Florida.

This exempt position requires 60% travel weekly throughout 10 counties in about a 120-mile radius for the purpose of cultivating and closing donors; most travel will be within the Tampa Bay area. Performance measurements will be negotiated by the VP after 90 days on the job, and are anticipated to include increasing numbers of new donors, upgrading existing donors, securing targeted numbers of major gifts/expectancies, and making weekly scheduled donor/prospect calls.

The position requires analytical, computer and people skills to:

  • expand and upgrade a small donor base
  • cultivate active volunteers and client families to become donors
  • identify and close prospects for major, planned and deferred gifts
  • prepare and deliver compelling written and verbal cases for support
  • collaborate to develop online giving, and use social media to identify and cultivate prospects
  • engage the support of staff, volunteers and board members in these processes.
Goodwill Industries-Suncoast follows the guidelines of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) Code of Ethical Principles and Standards of Professional Practice, the Donor Bill of Rights, and the National Committee on Planned Giving (NCPG) Model Standards of Practice for the Charitable Gift Planner.

The successful candidate will:

  • possess a minimum of a bachelor's degree; a position-related master's degree, and/or related credentials (CFRE, ACFRE, CFP, FAHP, CFA etc.) is preferred. Experience of 15-20 years of related experience is preferred and 10 years of experience is required.
  • demonstrate a history of increasing responsibilities and success in resource development, and/or closing major gifts or investments. Experience working with deferred gift instruments is highly desired; the capacity to discern prospect fit for various types of deferred giving instruments is required.
  • demonstrate the ability to develop long-term and productive relationships.
The position's salary and outstanding benefits package compares favorably to organizations of similar size across the entire US, based on AFP's 2009 national compensation report.

Goodwill does not negotiate employee contracts that guarantee income for a specified period of time. Selected candidates will be provided additional information on Goodwill's extensive benefit coverage, which includes:

  • 403b: match contribution of 4%; maximum employee contribution of 20% after one year of service (match fully vested in 5 years); before one year may participate without match
  • 10% deferred compensation match
  • Medical insurance at 78% for employee; family options
  • Prescription, dental, vision plan options; indemnity options
  • Life insurance
  • Long-term disability
  • Short term disability options
  • Section 125 Pre-Tax Plan
and other benefits.
